Top Dividend Stocks To Buy Right Now

As 2013 fast approaches its demise we’re squarely in the season of holiday parties, big meals, too much food (and perhaps drink), catching up with friends and family who are around for the season, annual “best of” lists and a mad dash to try to squeeze in any last minute “to-dos” that remain unchecked on your list marked “To-Do In 2013.”

Given the time of year, it’s natural (and healthy) to look ahead to 2014 as discussed here, but also to retrospectively look back on the year that was in terms of how you approached your investments and more broadly your finances.

At Dividend.com we like to use a mental framework whenever we’re looking back and bucket things items into three, simple categories:

1. Stop
2. Start
3. Continue

If you think about this mental exercise in the context of personal finance or investing you will come up with an improved framework for your decision-making going forward. This is less an exercise about specifics of the stocks within your portfolio and more so about your behavior and reaction to circumstances related to your portfolio.

But I think the damage of the shift toward buybacks may even be underrated. With interest rates at zero, investors have been clamoring for yield wherever they can find it. For years, that's been stocks with high dividends, whose prices have been pushed to record levels and yields down to near record lows. Shares of Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) now yield less than 4% andAltria Group (NYSE: MO  ) , less than 5%.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Even Verizon's ample dividend looks tepid compared with the 5.1% payout over at tobacco and alcohol firm Altria Group (MO). Altria is the biggest tobacco company in the U.S., led by its flagship Marlboro brand. Its other businesses include cigars and smokeless tobacco, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and a massive stake in SABMiller (SBMRY). In short, Altria is a textbook "sin stock" -- and that's proven heavenly for shareholders in the wake of the Great Recession.

Altria's business is stable, it's predictable, and it's massive. But that's not going to last for long. The fact is, the firm's business is slowly dying as demand for tobacco products continues to decline in the U.S. While international sales continue to show growth, especially in emerging markets, MO long ago spun its overseas business into Phillip Morris International (PM). But with a gradual decline in cigarette sales already priced into shares, MO's substantial cash flows and increasing exposure to the beverage business provide some shareholder consolation.

Altria's SABMiller stake, for instance, adds up to around $7 per share for MO, providing reduced risk for a material chunk of the firm's balance sheet. After all, the alcoholic beverage business remains hot right now. Investors should continue to expect Altria to payout the majority of its cash flows to investors for the foreseeable future. That makes a hike to its 44-cent dividend look likely in the next quarter.

    One smoking investment
Before tobacco companies became barbarians at the gates during the buyout-fueled '80s, they were simply tobacco companies -- reliable, cash-gushing portfolio cornerstones for many long-term investors. However, the tobacco industry's diversification began many years before most investors might remember. One of the most successful volleys of tobacco's diversification came on June 12, 1969, when Altria (NYSE: MO  ) acquired a majority interest in top U.S. brewer Miller from W.R. Grace.

One of my favorite reasons to reinvest in stocks I already own is when an uncertain, but favorable catalyst occurs, but the stock does little. So my Special Situations portfolio is adding $1,000 to each of the following three stocks: Cincinnati Bell (NYSE: CBB  ) , Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI  ) , and First Financial Northwest (NASDAQ: FFNW  ) . Read on to see why.

Advisors' Opinion:

Coming from the world of retail, I'm happy for someone to market to me when that marketing is good. The unexpected purchase that comes along only because a good sales person really gets me fired up is a purchase that I love to make. But sometimes what the company thinks is exciting strikes me as odd. In its last earnings release, as one of a mere five lead points, SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU  ) highlighted that sales fell less quickly this quarter. Huzzah!

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Down, down, down Supervalu (SVU) goes and where it stops, no one knows. Not even Goldman Sachs, which cut Supervalu’s shares to Sell from Neutral, though it does have a guess.

Goldman Sachs analysts Stephen Grambling and Christopher Prykull explain their thinking:

SVU shares are up 183% year-to-date (vs. S&P 500 +26%) as management initiatives have slowed the top-line deterioration at the company retail banners and Save-A-Lot. As the market has started to factor in stable-to-improving EBITDA on a highly levered equity base, the stock has re-rated from 4.5X EV/EBITDA to 6.1X EV/EBITDA. With the shares now trading above the historical average and roughly in line with peers, we expect future downward revisions to consensus estimates will likely drive a rerating of the shares to a more normalized level.

While we have been encouraged by the new management team success in effecting change, we believe cuts to food stamps (SNAP benefits), potential reductions to the transition service agreement, and encroaching competition will likely overwhelm operational improvements…

Shares of Supervalu have dropped 8.3% to $6.31 at 2:59 p.m., within spitting distance of Goldman’s $6 target price, while competitors Family Dollar Stores (FDO) has gained 0.2% to $70.16,Dollar General(DG) has fallen 0.4% t0 $59.02,Dollar Tree (DLTR) is off 1% to $59.33 and Wal-Mart (WMT) is little changed at $79.19.

  • [By Caroline Bennett]

Grocery store chain SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU  ) has appointed Bruce Besanko to be its new executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective as of Aug. 7.

  • [By Robert Hanley]

Looking ahead, though, future growth seems limited, given management's plans to continue consolidating its network.Indeed, the company intends to use the proceeds from the pending sale of its Canadian operations to pay down related debt and repurchase a significant portion of its shares. As such, Safeway seems to be in the same mind-set as fellow regional competitor SUPERVALU (NYSE: SVU  ) , which has been going through its own business rightsizing process.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon]

Leggett & Platt (LEG) is a leading manufacturer of engineered products and components. As the pioneer of steel coil springs found in mattresses and furniture, the company continues to supply a variety of components to bedding and furniture manufacturers. Additionally, Leggett & Platt's broader product line includes retail store fixtures, office furniture components, automotive seating components and industrial steel wire and tubing. Customers choose Leggett & Platt as a supplier because the company's manufacturing scale and processes result in lower costs than customers can produce themselves. We believe earnings should grow based on the contribution of new products, cost reduction efforts and the improving housing market. Moreover, future dividend growth appears likely based on a 42-year record of dividend increases. We believe Leggett & Platt is an attractive investment based on its 3.8% dividend yield and positive growth outlook.

I think the first step will be an increase in share-buybacks and an increase in dividends. As such, I am once again overweighting large-cap multinationals, including some great European names. My favorites include Novartis (NVS) , Legget and Platt (LEG) and Visa (V) . Of course, the potential risk is that the cash horde remains and even grows, likely creating a deeper negative interest rate environment something that surely would be damaging to our economy.

However, the tobacco industry has been a great hunting ground for investors. While no tobacco companies pay as high a dividend as Vector Group, long-term investors would do well to look at Altria in the U.S. or Phillip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) . Both were part of the original Phillip Morris conglomerate that split up around 2008 by spinning off Kraft and Phillip Morris International. Both businesses are leaders in their respective markets -- Altria in the U.S. and Phillip Morris the world, excluding China and the U.S -- and have exceptionally high-returning businesses. This is in part due to both having one of the top brands in the world with Marlboro. For dividend investors, the key part is that both have long-term histories of steadily increasing their dividends. If I had to choose just one, while Altria has a higher yield than Phillip Morris (4.9% vs. 3.9%), I would go with Phillip Morris. The company has better growth prospects and a lower payout ratio, and the business is far more diversified in terms of legal risk, whereas Altria could be hurt by any laws or rulings that go against tobacco companies in the U.S.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Altria has topped the tobacco industry for decades, with its leading Marlboro brand retaining its popularity around the world. But with the company having spun off its Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) division, Altria now has to rely on the U.S. market, with its unique challenges and risks. Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Altria over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Vornado Realty Trust (NYSE: VNO) is a traditional REIT.

Unlike mortgage REITs, Vornado actually invests directly in prime real estate properties such as office buildings, and the rents from these properties are what Vornado uses to generate income for unitholders.

Surprisingly, our energy boom could help China, but not in the way you might think. The energy sector in the U.S. has been an incubator for innovative drilling techniques and technologies over the past few years. Now we have a near monopoly on the technology. Like the U.S., China has massive shale gas deposits, and the technology we possess could help them develop domestic sources and allow them to become more energy self-sufficient. We're starting to see it happen. Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A  ) has signed a deal with PetroChina (NYSE: PTR  ) to spend $1 billion a year to develop shale resources there. Also, frackingspecialistsHaliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) are partnering with various Chinese companies to supply the country with hydraulic fracturing equipment and specialty fluids.
