Nissan, Subie sales jump; Toyota, Hyundai lag

Asian automakers showed mixed results in February, with some posting substantial gains and others seeing the sales decline.

NISSAN GROUP. The Nissan and Infiniti brands reported U.S. sales up 15.8% for February from a year ago -- a total 115,360 vehicles.

The Nissan brand set a February record of 105,631 sales, up 16.7%. That's the 11th monthly record for the brand in the last 12 months.

Rogue crossover SUV sales also set a February record, up 72.6%, to 17,197 in the month. February was the third full month of sales for the redesigned 2014 Rogue, which now is being built at Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn. assembly plant.

Sales of the all-electric Nissan Leaf set a February record, increasing 118.2% to 1,425.

The group's upscale Infiniti brand's sales rose 6.4% to 9,729 cars and trucks, with its new Q50 sports sedan getting traction with sales of 3,275 units. But cars sales overall were up just a half-percent while brand growth was driven by sales up 13.5% from a year ago of its SUVs and crossovers. The QX60 7-seat crossover led with sales up 1.6% to 2,704.

TOYOTA. Toyota Motor's sales of Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles fell 4.3% in February to 159,284, according to the company's sales preview. It said that weather was a factor in the first half of the month.

"February auto sales emerged from a chill in the second half of the month, poising the industry for a strong March," said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. "For Toyota, strong truck sales were a highlight this month, with RAV4 and Highlander posting best-ever February results."

The company will report more details of the month's sales later today.

SUBARU. Subie sales rocketed 24% from a year ago for February record U.S. sales of 34! ,909. Fueling the record were continued hot sales for the redesigned 2014 Forester SUV, up 95%, and the Impreza-based Crosstrek crossover, up 68%.

The company credited better inventory for the Forester and Crosstrek, which just added Subaru's first hybrid model. And important for its goal of record sales for 2014, Subaru said 60% of its buyers were new to the brand.

The only model that was not at least flat year-over-year was the outgoing Legacy midsize sedan, down about 31%. The redesigned Legacy, unveiled last month at the Chicago Auto Show, goes on sale later this year.

H. William Cyphers, senior sales VP, "We can expect our strong sales performance to continue for the remainder of the year and put us in great position to achieve our target of 460,000."

HYUNDAI.South Korean car company Hyundai said it sold 49,003 vehicles in February, down 6.8% from a year earlier.

The automaker said it was the best February for its Accent small cars and Tucson small SUV. Velostar and Sonata also did well, the automaker said in an early summary. It will report details later today.
