On Tuesday, CSX (NYSE: CSX ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.
As a major railroad company, CSX has benefited from high energy prices in recent years that have made rail transportation a more efficient way of moving goods over long distances. But the decline in demand for commodities like coal has crimped the railroad's results lately. Let's take an early look at what's been happening with CSX over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its quarterly report.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jonathan Fishman]
I have been following XRTX for the last couple of years as I cover the HDD industry very closely. XRTX sells HDD capital equipment, and following them helped me get a better feel for the CAPEX environment for the HDD duopoly. I witnessed XRTX's revenues plunge from about $455M a quarter back in 2010, to under $200M a quarter in Q1-13, a decrease of approximately 65% in revenues and more than 85% in net profits. This was mainly because NetApp (NTAP), once responsible for more than 45% of XRTX's Enterprise Data Storage Solution business, or $150M a quarter, started to source their disk arrays in-house. This trend was true with Dell (DELL) as well. I've summed up, NetApp's, Dell's and IBM's (IBM) contributions to XRTX's revenues for the past 8 quarters in the Enterprise Data Storage Solution segment.

Which solar power stocks are the proverbial picks of the litter, though? Here are the first five a newcomer might want to consider.
ReneSola Ltd. (SOL)While most solar stocks have done incredibly well so far in 2014, ReneSola (SOL) wasn’t one of them. In fact, SOL stock is a bit unusual in that it’s trading well under its October high of $6 per share. That’s not a bad thing, though. In fact, it may work to your advantage because it gives new buyers a chance to scoop up ReneSola shares at a bargain price before their next big run-up.

The holiday season is an exciting period for retailers as people are tempted to open their wallets and fill those retailers' coffers. In fact, this period is exciting for investors too as they watch their companies prosper. This was seen when shoe retailer Finish Line (FINL) posted its third-quarter results recently. Its numbers were ahead of analysts' estimates and sent shares higher.

Huh? What?
I know. That hardly seems to make sense, does it? Oshkosh simply crushed analyst earnings estimates for the quarter, delivering $0.97 per share in profit where only $0.86 were forecast. It added a dime to its full-year forecast as well, predicting that earnings could rise as high as $3.15 by year-end. First-half operating profit margins, at 5.8%, still fall far short of rival armored-vehicle makers Textron (NYSE: TXT ) and General Dynamics (NYSE: GD ) . But Oshkosh is now neck-and-neck with heavy-equipment maker Terex (NYSE: TEX ) , and is simply smoking unprofitable rival MRAP maker Navistar (NYSE: NAV ) . - [By Vera Yuan]
