In August, Kiplinger released an interactive map detailing the tax environment for retirees in each state. Users can compare up to five different states to get a picture of how their home states compares to others. Almost half the states were rated as tax-friendly or higher, with many of the most tax-friendly states concentrated in the South.
ThinkAdvisor looked for the five best and worst states for retirees to pay taxes in based on tax breaks offered to retirees; special considerations for retirement income; whether Social Security benefits were taxed and, of course, sales and income tax levels. We rated states that offered more benefits to retirees were better even if they had higher sales and income levels (and of course, states that offered fewer benefits came out worse).
(Check out Top 10 Offbeat, Cheap Cities for Retirement on ThinkAdvisor.)
Kiplinger published in October another interactive map that shows the tax environment in each state as it applies to residents as a whole instead of retirees.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Still, investors shouldn’t buy the sector willy-nilly. Porges recommends Celgene (CELG) and Gilead (GILD), among large caps, and notes that less-pricey stocks like Amgen (AMGN) should hold up better, as should midcaps with earnings and products, such as Alexion (ALXN).

Other notable losers include Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ALXN) , Keurig Green Mountain Inc. (GMCR) , and Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW) .
- [By Sean Williams]
Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN ) , for example, is currently worth more than $21 billion because of its focus on rare diseases. Its lone drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Soliris, is the most expensive drug in the world and is approved to treat a rare blood disorder known as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. This year alone, Soliris is expected to top $1.5 billion in sales.
- [By Sean Williams]
Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN )
If there's one company that certainly has big shoes to fill this earnings season its orphan drug developer Alexion whose lone drug, Soliris, is anticipated to bring in about $1.5 billion in sales this year. For the quarter, Alexion is forecast to grow revenue by 33% to $365 million with EPS rising 45% to $0.68. Given that Alexion has topped Wall Street's EPS estimates by an average of 19% in each of the past four quarters, I'd certainly be expecting an earnings beat if I were a shareholder. My worry here is that with Roche demonstrating potential interest in Alexion, even a big boost in its bottom line may not be enough to sustain Alexion at 34 times forward earnings.

For one thing, I can tell a great oil company from a not so great oil company. I can evaluate the company culture, management, etc. There was no way I was ever going to answer questions like that. But I can easily split Murphy U.S. retail business from its other operations. And I can compare that part of the company to other public companies like Pantry (PTRY) and Susser (SUSS). I can also this is much harder look at Murphy reserves and compare them to other oil companiesreserves. The SEC now requires a standardized way of reporting discounted net cash flows for all oil companies. So, there certainly a specific number available for every company. Whether it a very good number or not depends on the assumptions the method uses.

Tank you very much
I haven't been a fan of the shipping sector in years, but I'm finally coming around to a few of the stronger candidates. This week I plan to add oil transporter Teekay Tankers (NYSE: TNK ) to the list. - [By Taylor Muckerman]
After falling over 87% in the past five years, Teekay Tankers (NYSE: TNK ) believes that the supply of carrying capacity is finally aligning itself with demand again. For 2014, the company expects the lowest fleet growth since 2002. If this is the case, management believes fleet utilization will have reached a trough and could possibly begin its ascent to levels north of 84%. Tankers haven't enjoyed this level of utilization since the industry sank below this depth in 2010.
