It has a strategic alliance with GNC, a retailer of vitamin and mineral supplements.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Divine]
While there are many others, Rite Aid's (NYSE: RAD ) stock is particularly ill-suited for a comparison against the Dow's performance. The drug store, with a market cap just above $7 billion, is less than a quarter of the size of the Dow's smallest component. But Rite Aid investors are doing just fine without the Dow to serve as a constant comparison. Shares jumped 5.6% today as last month's same-store sales increased a booming 7.5% month over month, driven by revenue from its pharmacy. With increasing competition from other drugstores to recruit recurring pharmacy customers via techniques like loyalty programs, the longer-term concern is whether Rite Aid's slim margins can hold up or not.
- [By Jeremy Bowman]
Earlier in the day,Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD ) shares tumbled on its own weak outlook, finishing down 8%. The drugstore chain said that higher-than-expected costs for generic drugs were weighing on its bottom line, and it expects a per-share profit of just $0.04 this quarter, below estimates of $0.08. For the full year, it lowered its EPS guidance to $0.30-$0.40 from $0.31-$0.42, against the consensus at $0.39. Guidance on the top line was unaffected, and sales continue to steadily improve as Rite Aid said comps increased 3.5% in May. The lowered guidance was only minor, but shares have nearly tripled in the last year, so the stock price may have finally gotten ahead of expectations.
- [By Jonas Elmerraji]
Nearest Resistance: $3.20
Nearest Support: $2.70
Catalyst: July Sales ReleaseRetail pharmacy chain Rite Aid (RAD) is getting some attention this afternoon, after the firm released its July sales report to Wall Street. Same-store-sales increased 1.3% in the last month, a strong boost for a firm that's already seen its fair share of fundamental strength in 2013. Today's 5% increase in shares could just be the first step.
That's because RAD is currently forming a bullish ascending triangle pattern. The setup is formed by horizontal resistance at $3.20 and uptrending support to the downside of shares. I'd recommend becoming a buyer if RAD is able to print above $3.20 -- then it makes sense to keep a protective stop at the 50-day moving average.
